Welcome to the July edition of LITed !
As we settle into the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, it is helpful to recall that the word 'ordinary' in this context does not mean unremarkable or humdrum. Rather, it refers to the fact that the Sundays during this season are counted using 'ordinal' numbers. Our first article in this issue reflects on the importance of Ordinary Time as a time to implement the foundational principles of good liturgy and enable the community of faith to experience and witness to the presence of the risen Christ.
While our liturgical calendar is enriched with celebrations of feasts and memorials of the saints, Sunday is the original and ultimate feast day for Christians, on which the assembly gathers to participate in the paschal mystery and to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The second article in this month's LitEd examines the great feast of Sunday.
On Sundays in Year C the Lectionary takes us on a journey through the gospel of Luke, with its prominent theme of salvation and an emphasis on the ways in which God accomplishes great things through the lives of 'ordinary' people. The gospel of Luke provides the focus for our third article.
Best wishes from Tom Elich and Clare Schwantes
