News from the ACU Centre for Liturgy : Liturgical Music Course
The upcoming, highly-publicised postgraduate unit/professional learning seminar THLS502: Liturgical Music has been pivoted to an online platform (Zoom) given the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation and the resulting border closures and stay-at-home orders.
Professor Clare Johnson and the rest of the teaching team have prepared for this eventuality, and will as always provide an engaging and expert learning opportunity.
An updated flyer is attached below. Those who have already registered should make note of the change (do not come to Melbourne).
As the offering is now via Zoom, anyone who registers can join online. This pivot opens the learning opportunity to a much larger cohort of learners.

8th – 10th July 2021 Virtual Conference
A national virtual conference to be held in July is aiming to enliven Catholic communities as Australia emerges from the pandemic and approaches the first Plenary Council assembly.
“Alive in the Spirit” will offer keynote addresses, workshops, prayer and worship experiences to strengthen the mission and aims of local Catholic communities.
The conference website, aliveinthespirit.com.au, outlines keynote presentations to be given by Lana Turvey-Collins (Plenary Council facilitator), Fr Richard Lennan (Professor of Systematic Theology, Boston College) and Leisa Anslinger (Associate Director, Pastoral Vitality, Cincinnati Archdiocese).
One of the key attractions are over 30 on-demand workshops exploring areas such as best practice for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, how to engage beyond the margins of faith communities, planning for mission and renewal, supporting pastoral care, social justice initiatives and more.
The conference offers inspiration and support to lay and clergy, staff, leadership teams, finance teams, pastoral councils, pastoral ministers and volunteers, those in education, counselling, pastoral care, youth ministry, family ministry, aged care and chaplaincies.
Ms Turvey-Collins said the conference would offer a space to share “how we’re living, how we’re working together, and what that means for how the Spirit is moving in all of us, and what that means as Church.”
Sr Elizabeth Young RSM, Wilcannia-Forbes Diocesan Pastoral Worker, emphasised the value of the conference for rural and remote regions, saying, “now is such an important time to be building relationships, faith and hope as we look forward to the Plenary Council and also to a more compassionate world after COVID.”
Three long-standing and wide-reaching Catholic networks have combined forces to host this event: the Pastoral Ministry Network, Christian Initiation Australia Network, and the Mission Planners Network Oceania.
In his latest book, Pope Francis and the Liturgy, Kevin Irwin summarises, analyses, and assesses the ways Pope Francis understands the liturgy, both in relation to the initiatives and teachings of his predecessors, and in particular through his specific contributions about the liturgy and about the mission dimension of living what we celebrate. |
Praying Together With Young People 2021
Introducing a new daily prayer resource designed to help teachers, parents and catechists to lead prayer with a class or family. Also includes an electronic flip-book version of the book for easy display on screens.
The structure of the prayer for each weekday is the same so that prayer time becomes a familiar routine, leading children into a liturgical pattern of responses. Responses to the gospel reading for each day include intercessions, songs, guided meditations, short video clips or silent prayer. Hyperlinks in the electronic version of the resource provide easy access to online reflections.
